Connected creativity

 Debate

For the past few weeks in Debate studies, we have been debating in groups of 3's against each other. Each period we got a different topics and groups, in which we had to write our reasons about that topic and then debate against the other team. I really enjoy debating as we get to state our opinions about that topic and try to persuade the judges and opponent.

Thoughts on our school starting a debating team?

My thoughts on our school starting a debating team next year are positive, I really enjoyed debating and would love to do it again.STRATUS: Senior A Debating Team Win MSDC

Forensics

 Footprint Analysis

In forensics we have been learning about evidence. Yesterday we did a bit on shoe/foot prints. We put paint on our shoes and put our shoes on paper to see our shoe/foot prints. We saw that there were different sizes(length & width), patterns, how worn out it is, etc. We also did an activity in which we had to try and match the shoe/footprints. The different variables helped us predict which shoe would be which.
There are lots of different types of evidence left behind at the crime scene, one type is called impressions. Impressions are patterns left after being on the surfaces or people at crime scenes.

One type of impressions evidence are 'Footprints'.

Foot or shoe prints can be left behind at the scene and can be transferred onto a surface or left just as an imprint.

Types of ways to predict more information about the foot/shoe print:

  • Patterns

  • Random damage

(Things like cracks, and cuts or a stone stuck in the bottom. )
  • How much wear/damage(wear characteristics - how much they have worn it(if it is worn out or something)

  • size

(It depends on the length and width of the shoe)

Can help us predict height and walking style.

P.E

 Gymnastics

For the last month we have been doing gymnastics in P.E. I feel gymnastics is a fun sport to do. In previous years when I have done gymnastics, quiet a few times we have done it in front of class mates and the things we did were not as interesting as this year. My favourite apparatus is the trampoline because it is fun to jump on it. The things I have learnt are highlighted in the doc below along with the things I already knew(which have been crossed out).

English: Social media madness#1

 Rewriting the sentences:

1. TIRED! Physical therapy in the morning... I'm done for the day. As soon as Madison is home from girl scouts, hoping I can sleep!...

2. Me and my boo at the movie. Too cute.

3. You look so happy! Great picture.

4. You should call me if you need something.

5. I'm single and I'm gonna love it. Fred and I are getting a divorce, he put a restraining order on me. He needs help.

6. Thank you everyone, I'll be okay.

Science: Resistance

 How does resistance affect current?

Resistance: resistance is about pushing back. Resistance slows down the current.

Current: Current is how quickly the electrons move.
Voltage: Is how much energy the electrons are carrying.

- In series: In a series circuit the electrons go/pass through one path.
-In parallel: In a parallel circuit the electrons split into the different pathways/branches.

- The image on the left shows the difference between having a resistor and not having one/

-When there is a resistor the resistor slows down the currents.

-More resistance means the currents are slower.
-less resistance means that the currents are faster.

To differentiate between the two:
If you look at the series circuit with the resistor you will notice that the light is very less compared to the parallel circuit, which has more energy because there is nothing slowing down the electrons.

Electricity

 Circuits:

1. Series Circuit:

2.Parallel Circuit:

3. What is the difference between a series & parallel circuit?

- Series: In a series circuit all electrons pass through one path.

- Parallel: In a parallel circuit the electrons split ways, and go down to the different branches.

4. What is Voltage and current in a circuit?

- Voltage is how much energy the electrons carry.

- Current is how fast and slow the electrons move.

5. Explain why a string of Christmas tree lights would be parallel no series?

- Christmas tree light will not be series because the electrons will need to split off to different branches(lights) in the light.

Maori Language week task

 Kia Ora,

For maori language week, we did a task in which we had to create a splash page with words we could use when replying to "kei te pehea koe".

Physics

 Current Electricity:

1. What is the particle that moves in a wire?

The particle that moves in a wire are electrons. Electrons move from the negative end to the positive end.

2. If there is a high current in a circuit what does it mean?

If the current circuit flow gets too high it will melt the fuse. They are burning/ moving too fast.

3.How does electricity work to heat up a stove?

Electric energy transforms into heat energy and heats up the stove.

4. Where is DC electricity used? Where is AC electricity used?

- Direct Current(DC) is used in charging batteries, etc.

- Alternating Current(AC) is used in plugs, lights, etc.

Physics

 Static electricity

1. The particles that make up everything are Protons, Electrons and Neutrons.
- Protons have Positive charge.
-Electrons have negative charge.
-Neutrons have no charge.

2. It means it wants to have the same number of positives and negative.

3. Insulator does not pass electricity. If an Insulator passes on energy it is conducting( passing on electrons).

4. Example of static electricity.
-Rubbing a balloon on hair.
-Jumping on a trampoline.

The cay: Q and A

Chapter 12-13 - Q&A

1. Timothy and Phillip have been on the cay for forty-eight days.
2. Phillip puts a wet cloth on Timothy's fore head and gives timothy water.
3. Phillip is ready to climb the coconut tree because he is confident and willing to reach the top of the coconut tree. He wants to help Timothy and gather food.
4. I think that Timothy is trying to teach Phillip survival skills because timothy wants Phillip to be prepared for any situation that may occur, if Timothy is not there anymore.
5. I think the reason why Phillip asked Timothy if he is still black was because Phillips thoughts/opinion about Timothy had changed and so he thought that timothy was not black any more.

Health: discovery task

Effects of social media

In Health we were set a task that required us to to chose a task from the following options,
We were also given the option to work alone or in pairs. My pair was Emalea.
The topic that we choose was 'Effects of social media'.

The first thing we had to do after deciding on our topic, was to choose 6 big questions to answer.

After answering all the questions we had to create an activity from the following:
We chose to make an essay, we chose to do an essay because it was the most simplest way to show our work as we did not have lots of time left.

Below is the essay that Emalea and I created.

We have learned that the strategies, we have created/come up with are helpful to use if you would like to improve your wellbeing/wa hauora.

It was challenging when I could not think of an answer, or a easier way to explain my answer. I coped with the challenge by asking for help when stuck on how describe my answer. I worked well with Emalea, I believe she helps me not get distracted which makes me finish my work, at good(decent) quality and on time . Next time I will not get distracted by those around me. I am really proud of the work I have created with Emalea.

The Cay: do now

The Cay - Learn from home

Why is it difficult to live on a Cay?

I think that living on a cay would be a difficult thing because there won't be lots of resources, Compared to the current generation, the resources will be less advanced. Resources such as medicine, nutritious food, Clean drinking water, shelter to keep you decently warm or safe.  Living on a cay could be dangerous as we do not know what types of animals and harmful things exist there, because it an island there won't be a doctor to help you in need and you could get bitten by a living thing or touch a poisonous plant. Living on a cay is a task harder than it sounds, but I would still like to experience living on a cay. Living on a cay would be different from the life I live now.

P.O.V: living on the cay

Standing on the burning hot sand below me, It sure is a hot sunny day. looking in front, I see the vast, sparking, dark blue ocean, its waves, gently bumping into one another, forming movements in the ocean. I turn around to see the scenery behind me. I see the trees, mountain hills, By every mean all I see is green. The trees sway and suddenly I smell the heat of the day with a tint of salty ocean, although its a very, VERY hot day I seem to be enjoying the nice, hot feeling. I hear the rustling of the trees and the ocean waves, the light movements and then the caw, caw of the big birds. I look above me, the light blue sky, just makes me blush or maybe the sun right in the middle of the cloudless sky, it feels nice... really nice.

Langosta: week 5 do now

Langosta

Langosta is a lobster without claws.

What langostas could help with if stuck on an island?

If stuck on an island, eating langosta is a way to stop hunger, drinking its water after it is cooked and its shell could be used as a small cup to drink easily from.

P.E: Volleyball reflection

Volleyball

When I first started volleyball for P.E this year, I lacked a lot of reaction to get the ball and did less sets.

I believe currently I am doing better than when I first started.

Now, I react faster when I see the volleyball, I do more sets and also try to position myself, so I could get the volleyball over the net without it going outside.

I think the hardest thing about doing volleyball, is positioning yourself properly, so when the ball comes your way you hit it straight at the target(other side).

The thing I liked most about volleyball was playing with my friends.

 Calypso

Listening to the calypso reminds me of people doing a cultural dance in the beach or at night with the campfire. Or swimming under the sea and this song playing in the background. It is a very interesting song.

Chemistry: Types of energy

Types of energy

Intro:

We are learning about types of energy  and energy transformation.

1. Heat energy:

- Energy produced by quick movement of particles.

2. Kinetic energy:

-  Allows anything to move.

3. Sound energy:

- Anything you hear(sound). (vibrating particles that cause sound).

4. Light energy:

- Light that is visible.

5. Electric energy:

- In things that use electricity

6. Elastic energy:

- In things that are stretched

7. Chemical potential energy:

- Found in food(chemicals).

8. Gravitational energy:

- Things that are high above ground.

Energy Transformation:

Energy does not be created or destroyed, it just moves from one type to another = transformation.

Example: Marshmallow cannons:

1. Cut the base off a cup(polystyrene).

2. Cut  a balloon 1/2 way down the neck(of the balloon).

3. Stretch balloon.

4. Carefully put balloon over base of cup.

This is  a animation of how a marshmallow cannon works.

English: do now

Pontoon bridge

Pontoon bridges were used to move across rivers, as swimming across rivers would take a long time and would also tire the soldiers. They were also a good alternative to regular bridges because they use less resources, can be made faster and can also be reused.

1. Why were these bridges created?

Pontoon bridges were used to move across water, because it took a long time to built a regular bridge and/or swim across.

2. How are they built?

They were built by connecting with planks and ropes.

3. How are they reusable?

Because they can be taken down and used in another river/area.

U-boat German submarine

 U-boat German submarine

3 Facts:

1. U-boats were the only weapons that were of advantage to Germany as the British blocked Germany's ports to supplies.
2. Wilhelm Bauer was the person that design the ship in 1850.
3. In WW2 about 632 u-boats sunk.

Chemistry: Convection and Conduction:

 Convection and Conduction

Convection and Conduction are passing on heat energy.

when they have heat they have energy and they move faster ans faster and pass on energy.

Conduction: energy transfeing through contact
when the object is heated, the particles start moving faster and faster as they gain energy. these particles also try to spread out as the gaps between particles get bigger.

If an object is heated from one end, the particles can transfer heat along, this is CONDUCTON.
2 examples of good conductors of heat:
- stove
-pans

(some objects are good on heat these are called thermal conductor.)

Objects which are bad at passing on heat are called thermal insulators.
2 examples of good insulator of heat:
- red
- jackets

Convectionnon contact energy transfer, usually in liquid
-Hot stuff rises, cold stuff sinks

2 examples of good Convection of heat:
- hot air balloon
- soup in a pan

teabag rockets:
As we light the tea bags, the tea bags become hot there particles spread out and became less dense(light), as it became less dense it went up and when the particles went cold they became more dense(heavy) and compact and began to come down.

Distillation: Chemistry

Distillation:

Separating a solution/mixture using evaporation + condensation.

Distillation: Is the scientific experiment used to show the processes of evaporation and condensation.

Evaporation: Is when a liquid turns into gas, by heating up the liquid.

Condensation: Is when a gas is turned into a liquid, by cooling the gas down.

Experiment/Aim: Separating coke + sugar free coke to see how much sugar is present.

Hypothesis: I think that classic coke will have more sugar than the sugar free or diet coke.

Method:
- Heat up coke - until all liquid is evaporated, trapping the gas in a tube.
- Use ice around test tube to condense the gas.

distilation Result for diet coke:
While the diet coke was heating the liquid inside started to evaporate and transfer the water into the test tube which was inside the beaker with ice inside. The evaporated liquid in the form of gas travelled across the straw into the test tube becoming liquid because there was ice in the beaker which cooled down the gas and the gas condensed into water(liquid). Resulting the sugar was left into the conicle flask.

ICT Semester 1 Reflection

Hey guys, My name is Vanshika and this is a reflection of what I have done in I.C.T for semester 1.

In term one we began with typing.com, a site which we use to practise and improve our typing skills(using it at the start of each lesson for 10 minutes). Then we learnt about how to be safer on the internet through a site called https://beinternetawesome.withgoogle.com/en_us/interland (beinternetawesome). Beinternetawesome taught us about what to do in different situations on the internet(if in a problematic situation). To show our understanding of what we learned through beinternetawesome we made kahoots. Kahoot is a site which allows us to make and play different quizzes on lots of different topics. We learned about how to manage files, how to rename files, save files, as well as how to put them in different places.

WORD

Then we started on ‘Word’, a software. ‘Word’ is a word processor, it allows us to type text, save, and edit it if wanted with lots of helpful tools. In ‘Word’ we can also create or insert pictures. Using ‘Word’, we worked on a few different files. We used  pronto books for the steps and instructions. The tasks we had were to work on different, already completed documents, where we had to do spell checks, headings, copy/pasting as well as search and replace text. After a bit more of file management, we did a bit of drawing, we learned how to create things such as boats, TV’s and flowers(in 'Word' software). Learning the drawing process was a bit interesting because it took a bit longer to have a good drawing but there were a few tricks to finishing faster because of the tools on ‘Word’. As it was Easter we had to obviously do some Easter related tasks. So, for Easter we worked on an Easter recipe, which we were given the instructions and recipe for. Term 1 was nearing an end. We were to make 8 different posters, 4 for each topic. The topics were ‘Kids eat free’ and ‘Disney’.

Term 2 began with pronto and bravo book tasks.

Networking tasks: Bonsai & Goldfish:

Publisher

Afterwards we moved onto another software, ‘Publisher’. ‘Publisher’, is a software mostly for making cards, certificates, etc. The things we worked on ‘Publisher’ were making calendars and certificates. I think ‘Publisher’ is a pretty awesome software, the calendars we worked on turned out to be very beautiful.

Excel

Currently we are using ‘Excel’, which is also a software. ‘Excel’ is a spreadsheet, which is used for calculating, graphs and more. Using ‘Excel’ we worked on basic formulae as well as graphs.

Although I enjoyed most things I learned, my most favourite were making the calendar on ‘Publisher' and using ‘Excel’. I do believe it would have been a great idea to have also learned a bit about tools on Google docs or Google spreadsheets because they are easily accessible in devices as compared to ‘Word’, ‘Publisher’ and ‘Excel’.

I was unable to show more of the work I had done because the computers in school had been updated often, making the work I had done to disappear.

Thanks to Mr.Carter, that I.C.T in Semester one has been a great experience for me.

English: Week 9 do now

Being able to be confident when public speaking is an important life skill.

I agree with the statement that being able to be confident when pubic speaking is an important life skill, because being able speak confidentially helps you in lots of situations in life.  For example if something bad happened and I were to speak up about it, I must feel confident in order to explain and talk about it. confidentially speaking in front of the pubic helps you be more self-assured that things will be better and easier. These were the reasons why I believe that being able to be confident when speaking in public is an important life skill, because it not only makes you more organised it also helps you feel less insecure.

English: Week 8 do now

Matariki(Maori New Year) should be a public holiday

I believe that Matariki should be a public holiday in New Zealand because it is a  important part of the Maori culture which should be given importance and respect.  Because Maori people are an important part of New Zealand celebrating a event that is meaningful to them is a great way to deepen the understanding between each other and show appreciate the fact that we are one. Matariki is also a way to explore the Maori tradition These are the reasons why I believe that Matariki should be a public holiday.

English: Week 8 do now

English is the most important subject to learn in school

I disagree withe statement that English is the most important subject in school, because I believe that other subjects are also very important. Subjects such as maths and science are subjects that are also very important but they are still given equal priority making both subjects important but yet still equal. I believe that all subjects are important but none that are the most important.

Chromatography

Chromatography

Chromato: means colour
Graphy: means writing, or a science

Pigments: Pigments are molucuels that absorb, and transmit light.

Aim: To separate the different pigments from ink using chromatography

Hypothesis: I think we will see different colours on the filter paper

Method:  Felt tip pen, filter paper strips, test tube, measuring cylinder, pencil.

Game time 2 : Health

Game time 2 : Health reflection

11/06

In today's lesson we did a few games in rotation, using each game for 10 minuets in groups.

The CARR values I showed during the lesson were Commitment, Achievement, Respect and Resilience.
I showed these values by staying committed to the work I was meant to do, I showed Achievement by finishing the tasks given, I showed Respect by respecting the teacher and my group members and I showed Resilience by trying my best to do the work at my best ability.

The Interpersonal skills I showed in to days lesson were Verbal skills, non-verbal, Active Listening and  Manakitanga/being inclusive. These skills helped me communicate better with my group to complete the task easily. In today's lesson the people in my group were Lauren, Emalea and me. If I were to do it again I would try to give more warm fuzzies. I think I worked at level 3 today as I was focused and finished most of the tasks given.

GAME TIME - Health

 Game time:

08/06

In today's lesson we did a few games, rotating after every 10 minutes.

In today's lesson the Interpersonal skills I used were Verbal, non-verbal, active listening and Manakitanga/being inclusive. These skills helped me communicate and get along better with my group to complete the task. In today's lesson the people in my group were Emalea and me. If I were to do it again I would try to give more warm fuzzies and try to finish the games faster. I think I worked at level 3 because was focused and finished most of the work that I had to do.

STEAM: Problems in the environment

Problems in the environment

Lauren, Brody, and I have chosen the area environment for STEAM and the problem we have chosen is the depletion of fossil fuels.  Some ideas to fix this problem are
- by looking at how we could have some other way of producing
- researching how other countries are dealing with the problem and using their ideas
And more.

Your name is an important part of who you are: English

Do now:  Your name is an important part of who you are

I agree with the statement that your name is an important part of who you are because our names are the most easiest ways to remember each other and their personality. For example, imagine not having a name, how would people address you, introduce you or even talk to you properly.
In my opinion Having a name is a very interesting and important thing.

Health: Shark Infested Custard

 Shark Infested Custard

28/05
In today's lesson we did a Challenge/game called 'Shark Infested Custard' in which we have 5-6 people in each group with 3 hula hoops per group. Each group has to get from one end of the court to the other end without anyone touching the ground and if they do they have restart.

In today's lesson the IP(interpersonal) skills I used were Verbal, Non-verbal, Active listening. These things helped me communicate better with my group when coming up with a strategy for the challenge. Our group was the first to get to the end but because we had 5 people instead of 6 people in our group it didn't really count. The people that were in my team were Emalea, Lauren, Ethan and EJ which was a pretty successful team even though some of us don't necessarily work well together.

I believe that I worked at level 3 toady because I was focused most of the time, finished most of my work and worked with my team well.

If I were to do it again I would give more warm fuzzies.

Social Studies: Policies NZ

In social studies we have been learning about policies, The NZ policies that I found interesting are:

Becoming a prime minister

  1. Change PAYE

  2. Keep health  resources for primary, intermediate and secondary school students.

  3. Improve the rules about PRIDE gender people

  4. Provide better help to people with disabilities.

  5. Strengthen protections against elder abuse

  6. Allow people to claim both NZ and overseas pensions at the same time

  7. Gender equality, both Men and Women get paid fairly by their position not gender

  8. Continue the one billion trees programme

  1. Ban rodeo, greyhound racing and other activities that harm animal

  2. Fund free breakfast and lunch programmes in all low-decile primary and intermediate schools

English: Week 5 do now

The principal is the most important person in school

I agree with the statement that ' The principal is the most important person in school'.  Principals are the ones that make and approve important rules in the school so we can have a a better school.

Science: Concentration and dilution

Concentration and dilution

01/06

Today in science we learning about Concentration and dilution.

Concentration: A measure of how much solute(something) has been dissolved into the liquid solvent.
(In other words how much solute there is in the solution)

We can measure in two ways:
-How to dilute something is. (how weak it is).
-How concentrated something.(How strong it is).

dilution: Is when we make something less concentrated(weaker).
There will be less particles in the liquid.
Solute: Potassium Permanganate
Solvent: Water
Observation and discussion: After putting the Potassium Permanganate crystal into the first test tube which had water in it, the liquid in the test tube became a dark purple colour. Each time we added 5 ml to the next test tube from the one before the liquid became more dilute (meaning the liquid became more weaker).

Chemistry: Filtering

 Filtering:

31/05

Today in science we learning about Filtering.

Separating different sized particles out a mixture.

Not everything can be filtered, only things that can be insoluble. (You can only filter different sized particles not the same sized ones).

AIM: Make solution to separate a solution from a precipitate (precipitate is the name for a solid that forms in a liquid during a chemical reaction/

Hypothesis: I think

Method:

1. Pour approximately 50mL of copper sulfate solution into a beaker.

2. Add the same volume of sodium carbonate solution. A reaction will happen, you should see a cloudy blue precipitate form. Called copper carbonate.
3. Watch demo then fold filter paper to fit inside the funnel
4. Place the funnel with the filter paper inside of it, into the mouth of a conical flask.
5. Stir the mixture in the beaker, then carefully pour it into the funnel.
6. Observe what happened.

Equipment:

Sodium carbonate Copper sulphate

Conical flask Stirring Rod

200 ml Beaker Funnel

Filter paper

Observation and discussion:
After pouring the two liquids Copper Sulphate and Sodium Carbonate in one beaker it becomes a cloudy blue colour. The Cloudy blue liquid was Copper carbonate. After filtering the solution it became a clear liquid which became Sodium sulphate.
